Silvio’s Italian Villa opens new outdoor patio

WARWICK — Frank and Valentina Muto are celebrating their first anniversary as second-generation managers of Silvio’s ItalianVilla, 274 Route 94 South, with the opening of a new outdoor patio and garden area.

In good weather, the picturesque outdoor seating areas as well as the indoor dining rooms will be open Tuesday through Sunday from noon. The restaurant also offers catering, on or off premises, and accommodations for private parties, corporate events, weddings and other celebrations.

The restaurant and cocktail lounge, which was purchased by Frank Muto’s parents, Silvio and Pina Muto, in 1993, has been owned and operated by the Muto family for almost 20 years. It is well known for its charming atmosphere, elegant dining rooms, variety of entertainment, authentic Italian cuisine and, yes, ghost stories.

Many believe that Silvio’s Italian Villa is haunted.

That notion did not seem far fetched to the producers of a TV show called “The Haunted Collector,“ which was recently shown on Syfy (formerly Sci-Fi Channel), a cable television channel featuring not only science fiction but also supernatural programming.

The TV crew visited the restaurant to check out claims of paranormal activity and interview Frank and Valentina Muto who live on the upstairs floor. The investigators reported that the building, originally an 18th century mansion, had become a hotbed of unexplained events and that Valentina Muto has felt a phantom presence physically grab her. They also learned that Frank Muto has often been woken at night by a frightening scream.

There’s much more and the possibility of a paranormal experience has been a major attraction for curious diners.

The background for all this mystery is that in 1920 Harry Vail, a famous gunsmith, purchased what was then known as Maple Glen Farm. There were family tragedies in later years including an unsolved murder of Vail’s sister and his own suicide in what is today the Peach Room of the Italian Villa.
