Safety enhancements, upgrades to be included in Florida School District's 2018-19 budget

    FLORIDA —The Florida School District’s proposed 2018-19 school budget will include security enhancements to the district’s buildings, minor capital improvements and a police presence in the district’s schools.
    Superintendent Jan Jehring said the District is in discussion with area police departments to increase the presence of law enforcement.
    In addition to supporting instruction, the proposed budget includes minor capital improvements, the purchase of a school bus and security and safety enhancements.
    Those enhanced measures may include additional security cameras, a new visitor check in system and the restructuring of the entrances of Golden Hill Elementary School and S.S. Seward Institute.
    The spending plan is expected to remain under the tax cap. The district is currently operating under a $21.2 million budget for the 2017-18 school year.
    A public hearing on the 2018-19 budget will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, in the S.S. Seward Memorial Building, 51 North Main St., Florida.
    The budget vote and election of members of the Board of Education will be held Tuesday, May 15, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. , at the S.S. Seward Institute, 53 North Main St., Florida.
