— The Orange County Citizens Foundation has awarded Safe Harbors of the Hudson with the first ever Placemaking Award. This award is new this year, in recognition of individuals, organizations, and projects for making positive contributions to the creation of “places” in the areas in which they live and work. The award was given at the Orange County Citizens Foundation’s 5th annual conference held at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center on March 15. The conference is designed to help community and business leaders, elected officials, and engaged citizens improve our communities through making place. This conference is a wonderful opportunity to learn new ways to improve our community and to network with like-minded individuals.

Safe Harbors is a large scale redevelopment project in the City of Newburgh combining housing and the arts. The group is continuing its monthly informational tours, beginning on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m.

Safe Harbors, whose mission is transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts, purchased the old Hotel Newburgh in 2002 and turned the blighted eyesore into the Cornerstone Residence. Named Supportive Housing Network of New York’s “Residence of the Year” in 2007, the Cornerstone is home to 128 adults including the formerly homeless, veterans, those living with mental health diagnoses, artists and low income working adults in need of affordable housing. The project also includes the Ann St. Gallery, a contemporary arts venue, and the Ritz Theater Lobby, live performing arts space.

The tours will highlight how Safe Harbors transformative supportive housing, award-winning contemporary art gallery and performing arts theater is instrumental to the revitalization of downtown Newburgh. All attendees will be entered in a drawing to win concert tickets to an upcoming show at the Ritz!

Tours, which will last approximately one hour, will be held monthly on a rotating basis, the second Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by the second Thursday at 4 p.m. The 2013 tour schedule follows:
