PTA declines proceeds of Whole Kids Education Foundation presentation
WARWICK — A story published in last week's Warwick Advertiser reported that at 7 p.m. this coming Tuesday, October 16, the Whole Kids Education Foundation would introduce its "Pounds for Pupils" program at the Warwick Valley Community Center.
The article explained that adults, who enrolled in weight loss programs, could raise small donations for every pound lost over a three-month period. The proceeds would then be donated to beneficiaries such as the various PTAs and private schools for programs that would elevate health and wellness for local children.
However, late last week Denice Davis, founder and director of the Whole Kids Foundation, requested that the article be revised because the Parent Teachers Association Council had declined the proceeds and requested that the PTAs not be mentioned as associated in any way with the Pounds for Pupils program. But it was too late to stop the presses and revise the story.
"This decision was in no way a reflection on the good work of the Whole Kids Foundation," said PTA Council President Katie Bisaro. "We agree with its objective. This was simply an issue involving our insurance and possible liability."
Bisaro explained that while the PTA appreciates all donations, the organization's handbook suggests that they not appear to endorse "red light items."
Weight loss and exercise programs, where there might be an injury or health issue, could fall into that category. The PTA had questions and there wasn't enough time for further investigation.
The mission of Whole Kids Foundation, a non profit organization, is to assist local schools by creating funding efforts to support educational programs for children with an emphasis devoted to healthy living, creative development and sustainable community supported lifestyle.
"We stand by the PTA retraction," said Davis, "and we will be donating the funds to the private schools and various programs, clubs and organizations of your choice that are within the district and meet the requirements of our mission statement. A list will be posted on our Web site for participants to choose."
