Project Graduation raises more than $7,000 with Harlem Wizards' basketball contest

WARWICK — A team of Warwick Valley School District teachers, administrators and students may not have defeated the world-famous Harlem Wizards but the game, which featured the Wizard's basketball and comedic talent, did raise more than $7,000 for "Project Graduation."

The game was held March 23 at the Warwick Valley High School and the fans were treated that afternoon to a display of tricks, coordinated ball handling, fancy passing, lots of laughs and audience interaction.

A surprise guest, retired NBA player Tim Basset, who played power forward for the New York Nets among other NBA teams, was also on hand and later that day, signed autographs at a reception held for everyone including the Wizards at Warwick's Fetch Bar and Grill.

His appearance and autograph signing had been arranged by Fetch co-owners Adam Powers and John Barounis.

"Even though it was a cold day and lousy weather for this time of year, this was the most successful event thus far," said high school parent Robin Corneby, who heads "Project Graduation," and organized the basketball fund raiser. "And our sponsor, ShopRite, was a big help."

"Project Graduation" sponsored the event to help raise funds for its annual "All Night Party," an alcohol- and drug-free party exclusively for Warwick Valley High School graduating seniors in a safe environment.

It has become a tradition to honor the graduates with an all night safe party as a gift from the parents and the community.

A "Project Graduation" telethon, from 5 to 9 p.m., is planned for April 27 on cable television.
