Pine Island Chamber commissions sign restoration

PINE ISLAND Driving through the main intersection in Pine Island, you may notice something familiar is missing.
The large hand carved wooden welcome sign that reads Pine Island has been taken down.
The sign was originally paid for by the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce a number of years ago, and having weathered many seasons of sun, wind and rain, was overdue for restoration.
The sign was created and carved by local wood artisan Susan Bemel. The chamber has reached out to her again, this time to refurbish the sign.
So far, she has removed the paint from the three-dimensional sign and has strengthened the framing of the sign for it to last at least several more years.
With a fresh paint of coat and sealant, the sign is expected to be completed and replaced in its place by late spring.
Funds for the signs refurbishment came from a portion of proceeds from the Pine Island Chambers 2011 Black Dirt Feast – an annual farm-to-table event – that had been earmarked for hamlet beautification.
