Orange County to collect household hazardous waste on Sept. 23

NEW HAMPTON — Orange County will hold the next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, Sept. 23rd, for residents.
The collection center will be at the New Hampton Fire Training Center, located at 9 Training Center Lane and Route 17M, New Hampton.
This event is free for Orange County residents with proof of residency (no registration is required).
Acceptable Items: Adhesives, aerosol cans, automotive products, fire extinguishers, flammable liquids (oil, gas, kerosene and/or mixtures), corrosives/cleaners, creosote, driveway sealer, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, inks, mercury, oil-based paints only, pesticides/herbicides, propane cylinders (camp size), roofing tar, rubber cement, solvents/thinners, wood preservatives, varnishes/shellac/stains, used cooking oil, rechargeable batteries.
Not accepted: Refrigerators, tires, air conditioners, electronics, latex (water based) paint, barbecue-size propane tanks, appliances, single-use batteries (can be thrown in the household trash).
How to dispose of latex paint: Remove the lid, put the paint can in a safe place away from children and animals and let the paint dry out. If there is a large quantity of paint in the can, line a cardboard box with a black garbage bag and pouring paint in the bag and letting it air dry. Another option is to add cheap, clay kitty litter to the paint until it is a solid, then dispose of it in your household trash. Recycle paint cans when possible.
