Orange County Airbnb hosts earn most in local area

Airbnb hosts living within the Mid Hudson region made thousands of dollars in supplemental income this past year, especially in Orange County.
Out of the six counties in the region, hosts in Orange County made the most supplemental income in 2018, with an average of $9,200.
According to the popular short-term rental site, Airbnb, 440 hosts in the county now use the site to allow guests to rent their rooms, homes, apartments and cabins. This past year, 35,000 stayed in Orange County.
“2018 was another great year for Airbnb in the Mid Hudson region, with more local residents and small businesses able to benefit from the economic opportunities created by home sharing than ever before,” said Airbnb Head of Northeast Public Policy, Josh Meltzer, in a statement. “As we reflect on this past year and celebrate the beginning of a new one, we are proud to have played a small role in countless memories and cultural exchanges statewide — from summer trips to the holiday season. We look forward to continuing to help New York families earn extra income while allowing countless communities to enjoy the tourism economy in 2019.”
Throughout 2018, Airbnb guests have been drawn to the area during big events, such as local music festivals, the summer tourism boom and fall foliage season. Hosts are then able to tap into that increased demand by opening up their home and making some extra income, while ensuring visiting guests will have access to affordable accommodations.
Ulster County has the most hosts and subsequently saw the most income and guest arrivals. Overall, Airbnb hosts made $50.4 million in the region and welcomed 300,700 guests.
Orange County hosts are now also taking advantage of the recently finalized new tax agreement between the county and Airbnb. The agreement allows Airbnb to collect and remit local hotel and motel room taxes on behalf of hosts who have listings within the county.
This setup makes the process more seamless for hosts while providing a source of revenue to Orange County.
Twenty-eight counties within New york State have such an agreement.
Top destination in 2019This year, Airbnb expects the number of guests to only increase in the Mid Hudson.
The company recently forecasted that the Hudson Valley and Catskills is one of the top trending destinations in the world, making it the 15th most popular spot for travellers in 2019.
The increase demonstrates the overall growing popularity of the region, with tourist activities including the hiking trails, ski resorts, vineyards, orchards and farms.
Airbnb also said they expect to see an increase in bookings this summer due to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock celebration, which is likely to draw a number of music fans to the area. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts recently announced that the festival will take place from August 16-18.
