PINE ISLAND — It was a beautiful sunny Sunday and what better way to spend it than to listen to great polka music, watch traditional Polish dancers and watch an onion-eating contest.
The Pine Island Legion of American Veterans pavilion was once again host to Jimmy Sturr’s Onion Festival.
Festival attendees had a great afternoon of listening to a multi-Grammy award-winning band, watching the Polkalenie Dancers and the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce’s ninth annual onion eating contest.
Six contestants lined up at the table to participate in one of the most challenging competitive eating-contests around.
All started with an eight-ounce onion. Raymond Weslowski won this year's contest, finishing in one minute and 52 seconds.
The Pine Island Chamber holds the contest to celebrate the region's rich onion growing heritage.
Weslowski won a $100 check from the Orange County Vegetable Growers Association, a plaque from Orange County Farm Bureau and, for the first time, a growler of the newly formulated Drowned Lands Saison brewed with local Pine Island onions from the award-winning Pine Island Brewery.
