Old news gets a new life

WARWICK — The Albert Wisner Public Library has just unveiled a new historic newspaper web site that the public can search for free.

The Warwick Advertiser for 1866, 1870 and 1872 were digitized for this trial project. The newspapers can be searched by keyword at warwick.advantage-preservation.com, or through a link on the library’s Local History page.

The library has been working for the past dozen years or so to gather a more complete collection of newspapers on microfilm and now has most of the existing issues of both the Advertiser and the Warwick Valley Dispatch available in the local history room.

The most recent microfilming project was to piece together the broken pages of the Warwick Dispatch for 1900-1902, which took volunteer Bob Demetry and librarian Sue Gardner many months.

That film is now available at the library.

“Now that we are nearing the end of rescuing the content of our precious local newspapers through the stable technology of microfilm, it’s time to begin scanning that film and getting easier access to the information it contains,” Gardner said. “We’re happy to be able to unveil this new service, and look forward to adding more to it gradually.”

For more information or help using the newspaper site, contact the library’s Help Desk at 986-1047 ext. 3, or e-mail warref@rcls.org. You can also access other resources like historic maps of the areas, full text of local history books, significant news articles and documents, through the Local History link at www.albertwisnerlibrary.org.
