O.C. Democratic Women host program on women in sports

NEWBURGH — On Sunday, Feb. 3, Orange County Democratic Women will host a program celebrating women’s achievements in sports that will include the 2012 documentary film, “Sporting Chance, the Legacy of Title 9,” narrated by Holly Hunter.
The organization chose Super Bowl Sunday for its gathering because it is a day on which people focus on sports, Willa Freiband, president of Orange County Democratic Women, said in her press release announcing the program.
Title 9 is often associated with women’s sports, but its affect on educational opportunities has been significant. “ Looking at Title 9’s impact on women’s advancements connects past victories with the work that is still ahead to gain gender equality,” Freiband added.
According to Freiband, Orange County Democratic Women is an organization that works throughout Orange County to create more equitable representation and greater participation of women in all levels of government and leadership positions.
In addition to the documentary, there will be two speakers
Michelle Larson, a student at OCC with a concentration in Recreational therapy, will talk about how her interest in sports enabled her earn a scholarship to reach her academic goals.
Orange County Legislator Roxanne Donnery also will speak. She has been a leading voice in the battle to keep Valley View open and to restore the Government Center in Goshen.
The event will start at 12:30 at Daddy O’s in the Newburgh Mall. It is open to the public. There is a charge of $25 for the lunch, movie and speakers.
RSVP’s are needed for purposes of planning. Contact Freiband at ocdwpres@gmail.com
About Title 9
According to the Equity Resource Center, “The modern women’s movement achieved a historic victory on June 23, 1972, when Title IX was enacted as part of the Education Amendments.
The preamble to Title IX states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational programs or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
