Warwick Community Ambulance to celebrate its 70th anniversary
WARWICK — The Warwick Community Ambulance will mark 70 years of serving the residents of Warwick with a dinner on Friday, Oct. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Warwick Country Club.
Warwick Community Ambulance is the second oldest in the state. In 1941, 23 men took First Aid classes taught by Dr. Harry Sayre Sr.
The first ambulance call was June 24. By August 22 calls were logged.
The first ambulance was a 1941 Buick; the first ambulance bay was the garage was under the Old Town Hall.
In 2012, the Warwick Community Ambulance Service has three ambulances, a support truck and a six-wheeler and trailer to carry it wherever it is needed.
The corps annually answers more than 1,200 calls and standbys. Warwick Ambulance has 50 members, 28 of whom are trained as emergency medical technicians; the rest are certified in first aid and CPR.

Village to conduct sewer smoke tests beginning Oct. 1
WARWICK — The Village of Warwick will be conducting smoke testing of the sanitary sewer in the neighborhoods south of Galloway Road during the week of Oct. 1.
According to a press release from village hall, activities will be conducted daily from 7 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m. The sewer line in the street in front of each house will be filled with non-toxic smoke and the smoke will move into the laterals that connect to your house.
The smoke coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground is non-toxic, non-staining, has slight odor, white to gray in color and creates no fire hazard, village officials said. The smoke should not enter a home unless there is defective plumbing or dried up drain traps.

Village officials also urge any individual or business owner who has respiratory problems and is immobile to notify them at 845-986-2031 prior to testing.
Lion’s Quest After School 2012 program starts Oct. 3
WARWICK — The Warwick Valley Community Center will offer the Lions “Quest Skills for Adolescence...Out of School Time” beginning Wednesday, Oct. 3.
According to a press release from the center, this very successful leadership program addresses issues with preteen and teens today such as skills for:
Making healthy choices units covering drug, alcohol and tobacco use.
Interactive, student-focused lessons.
Sessions on anger, conflict and stress management.
Cross-curricular activities to encourage team-teaching.
This extensive curriculum has been expanded to help students manage conflict and anger and to help them deal with the critical issue of bullying.
Thanks to the Warwick Lions Club, the center is able to offer this program free to young people in the community.

The next Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event will be held for businesses, farmers and schools on Friday, Oct. 12, and for all Orange County residents on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Fire Training Center in New Hampton.

The Receiver of Taxes reminds residents that they can pay school taxes at Town Hall until Oct. 1st without penalty and up to Oct. 31st with penalty. The Receiver’s office is open from 8:30 .am. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Everyone in the Town and the Village of Warwick is entitled to recycling pick-up under a current contract the town has with County Waste.
Garbage pickup is provided by private haulers; residents contract for this service and the choice of a trash hauler should have no effect on recycling service. For more information, contact Sweeton’s office at 986-1120 ext. 241.
