Newhard, McManus, Lindberg re-elected in Warwick
WARWICK — Villagers’ support of Mayor Michael Newhard and Trustees George McManus and William Lindberg was evident Tuesday as more than 300 showed up to vote in this uncontested village election.
“I was pleased at the turnout for our Village election especially since the three seats were unopposed,” said Newhard the day after the election. “I felt that the overall election was a vote of confidence; I recognize it not only as a validation of work performed but an expectation for the future.”
There was a small but organized write-in effort by some residents who disagreed with the village’s approval to allow Main Street restaurant Yesterdays to move to Elm Street. Steven Gross and John Maxcy, both vocal opponents of the proposal, received 48 and 46 votes for trustee respectively.
The group of village residents against Yesterdays’ move to 16 Elm St. appealed to the village board to take the property using eminent domain and turn it into a parking lot when it looked like the planning board would approve the application.
Newhard will begin his next four-year term of office on April 2, having served as mayor since 2001.
McManus has been a member of the village board for 15 years. Lindberg has eight years on the board.
“I feel that the Village Board, administrative staff and village departments all strive to excel which has developed a sense of teamwork and pride,” said Newhard. “I’m looking forward to working with Trustee Lindberg, especially on projects that involve our parks, and Trustee Mc Manus with his work and as part of the Coalition for Prevention.”
Gross, Maxcy, Barbara Bald and “Wadeson” each received one write-in vote for mayor. In addition to Gross and Maxcy getting write-in votes for trustee, seven others received one write-in vote each for trustee.
