Neighbors helping neighbors

WARWICK — There are many older adults and adults who have disabilities living alone in Orange County.
And while some may enjoy their independence, others, as they age, may feel that this style of living can become difficult over time. They may find themselves feeling lonely or unable to do daily tasks.
That is why the Town of Warwick has recently partnered with the Jewish Family Service to create the “Friendly Visitor Program.”
This program allows volunteers to assist older adults and adults with disabilities with companionship or provide daily tasks, which is especially sought after during the year.
By simply driving someone to a doctor’s appointment or by talking with them, you can help a neighbor feel more connected to their community.
Some other helpful tasks volunteers can provide:
• Clerical assistance
• Transportation around town
• Chatting on the phone
• Grocery shopping
Volunteers are trained in a two-part series which concludes with a background check.
Volunteers will also be provided with liability insurance while assisting neighbors.
The first training date is Thursday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Warwick Town Hall on Kings Highway.
The services, which have no fee, are available to older adults and adults with disabilities living in the Town of Warwick, Village of Warwick, Village of Greenwood Lake, Village of Florida and the hamlet of Pine Island.
Volunteers can be any age, so it’s ideal for anyone who desires to help neighbors. For more information relating to volunteering, call the Friendly Visitor Program at 845-986-1124.
