Morgan Thonus and Matthew Ulrich awarded $1,000 Robert F. Helmrich Memorial scholarships

WARWICK — The Robert F. Helmrich Memorial Scholarship Fund awarded $1,000 scholarships to Warwick Valley High School students Morgan Thonus and Matthew Ulrich on Thursday, May 31.

This award recognizes exceptional students in Warwick and Vernon, N.J., who have served their community and provides them with assistance to pursue their educational goals.

The scholarship was established in 2011 by the family of Robert “Bob” Helmrich, who passed away in 2009. Helmrich served as a lieutenant of the Vernon, N.J., Township Police Department and was one of the original officers when the department was formed as the first full-time police force in Vernon in 1975.

He was a founder and board member of the Vernon Police Athletic League, which has organized athletic events for the youth of Vernon for more than 20 years. Among other activities,Helmrich also served on the Township Board of Recreation, helping to coordinate programs and promote a sense of community.

The scholarship recipients: Morgan, a member of the varsity swim and lacrosse teams, was recognized for her efforts and contributions Wounded Warrior Project.

Matthew, a member of Warwick’s varsity football team, was recognized for his efforts as a volunteer firefighter and work with Warwick EMS.
