NEW WINDSOR — A community remembering ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the Temple of Virtue in the New Windsor Cantonment, the last encampment of the Continental Army and the site of the first U.S. military chapel, on Route 300, adjacent to the Purple Heart Hall of Fame.
This year, the event will focus on remembering experiences of military sexual trauma.
The ceremony’s purpose is to remember stories related to shared experiences of war and military service that organizers say tend to be ignored.
The event welcomes civilians, veterans and active military personnel and will include storytelling, music and rituals of remembrance.
Veterans leading the ceremony include Everett Cox and Lawrence Winters. Local ministers leading the ceremony include the Rev. Dr. Chris Antal, the Rev. Mary Lou Baumgartner and Terri Pahucki.
A free will donation will be collected on behalf of Protect our Defenders, the only national organization solely dedicated to ending rape and sexual assault in the military.
The Veteran/Clergy Memorial Day Working Group of the Greater Newburgh Interfaith Council, Veterans for Peace Hudson Valley Chapter 177, and Vet 2 Vet – Orange County are the co-sponsors of this ceremony.
