Matthew Hansen named New York State Class A Football Scholar Athlete of the Year

    — Warwick’s own Athletic Director Greg Sirico, along with Allstate Insurance’s Bill Garcia has promoted the Student-Athlete of the Week for years.
    Together they have supported our local student athletes from Warwick Valley High through spotlighting the student’s accomplishments on and off the field, pool, court, etc.
    Warwick now has a student who has been spotlighted twice in the student athlete of the week, both as a junior and a senior. He has been a N.Y.S. scholar-athlete since seventh grade (earning more than a 90 average in season varsity sport) and now a Warwick Valley High School first: New York State Class A Football Scholar Athlete of the Year.
    Matthew Hansen has earned this rare honor from the New York State High School Football Coaches Association (NYSHSFCA) and was presented his award in Syracuse this past Friday night at an awards banquet attended by eight of his coaches, including Coach Sirico and his ski coach Matt Carcatera, along with his family including his grandparents, his girlfriend Emily, his parents Scott and Hillary, his sophomore brother Christopher, his seventh grade sister Hallie and other accomplished honorees.
    He was chosen from more than 50 nominees from a 15-person NYSHSFCA committee.
    In the classroomMatthew’s accomplishments are many: he has over a 102 GPA, ranks 11th in his class (top male), received a 1430 on his SAT’s, takes all AP and Honors classes .
    He will attend Clarkson University in the fall for engineering.
    He is also an accomplished guitar, piano and violin player, as well as a member of both the National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. He also is a math and science tutor to many underclassmen.
    He also was a volunteer youth coach for many of the up and coming young lacrosse players.
    AthleticsHis sports career is long as a three-season varsity player along with year-long lacrosse in various travel leagues.
    He was a starting middle linebacker with more than 60 tackles and two sacks in his last season of football for the Wildcats.
    He is the undefeated three-year Section 9 division winner for the Warwick Alpine Ski Racing Team and will compete in Sections this upcoming week and has a ticket straight to the State Championships later this month.
    He is also the face-off specialist for the Warwick lacrosse team where he will start back up in the spring.
    His high school career will have him earned 11 varsity letters and he plans to play lacrosse in college.
    He is a well-rounded individual and has earned this great honor through his hard work and love of both school and sports.
