Master Doug Cook awarded 7th degree black belt

WARWICK — Master Doug Cook, owner and head instructor of the Chosun Taekwondo Academy located at 60 Galloway Road in Warwick, was recently awarded his 7th degree black belt at a promotion examination overseen by martial arts legend, Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun.
During the two-hour test, Cook was required to demonstrate proficiency in skills ranging from complex self-defense techniques, poomsae – the choreographed, ancient formal exercises unique to taekwondo – and free-sparring.
The event culminated with the breaking of multiple pieces of wood with intense kicks, followed by a six-brick hand break requiring raw power and supreme focus.
“I feel honored beyond measure to receive my 7th degree black belt from Grandmaster Chun, one of the five original masters who immigrated from South Korea in the 1960s to promote taekwondo in America," Cook said in the press release announcing his accomplishment. "He has been my instructor for almost 20 years and while I have learned the physical aspects of the art from him, he has graciously transmitted the discipline’s deep philosophical doctrines to me as well. My students and I are fortunate indeed to have him as our mentor.”
Aside from his teaching responsibilities at the Chosun Taekwondo Academy, Cook has authored four best-selling books focusing on taekwondo - the traditional martial art and Olympic sport of Korea - and is featured regularly in various martial arts journals and periodicals.
He has received numerous citations over the years for his contributions to the art including a special citation from the Korean government, presented in Washington, D.C., by the U.S. Ambassador from South Korea, for his academic contributions to taekwondo.
