WARWICK — The Village of Warwick, in partnership with the Sesquicentennial Committee and the Warwick Valley School District, is sponsoring several joint activities and events in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Village in 2016-17.
In honor of this special anniversary, students in Park Avenue Elementary School and Sanfordville Elementary School classes participated in a vote to choose the Village tree, flower and bird.
Village Mayor Michael Newhard and his assistant, Mary Collura, recently announced the winning tree, flower and bird at Village Hall before an audience that included School Superintendent Dr. David Leach; School Board President Lynn Lillian; Principal Sandy Wood and student representatives from Park Avenue Elementary School; and Principal Johnna Maraia and student representatives from Sanfordville Elementary School; and parents.
The winning symbols are:
• Village Tree: Maple
• Village Flower: Rose
• Village Bird: Hummingbird
“Thank you to the schoolchildren, teachers and principals of Park Avenue Elementary School and Sandfordville Elementary School for participating in this wonderful project, connecting our children with our Village as we begin our 150th Anniversary of Incorporation," the mayor said during the announcement.
The choice of community symbols in the form of a bird, flower and tree is a fun, creative project - especially through the unfiltered eyes of children.
The choice of a rose for the Village Flower is perfect for the "Queen Village" of the Hudson Valley.
The selection of the maple as the Village Tree is most appropriate, since the Village’s recent street tree inventory showed that Maples are the most abundant trees along the streets of our Village.
And finally, the hummingbird as the Village Bird speaks of the whimsical nature that is a child’s perspective, and speaks of the benefit of a bird that is key to pollination and our environment.”
SesquicentennialThe Village of Warwick will celebrate its 150 year anniversary next year and plans for the 2017 Sesquicentennial are underway. Celebrations will take place throughout the year, including annual events and Sesquicentennial events.
Plans include parades, picnics and contests for all ages. The 50-year old time capsule will be dug up and another one will be buried in its place.
The Sesquicentennial website features historic Warwick photos, upcoming events, links to local history websites, a time line of the history and development of the village and more.
