Local food sought for ‘The Land We Share’ benefit

WASHINGTONVILLE — Local foods sourced from local farms are being sought for “The Land We Share,” Orange County Land Trust’s annual benefit reception and silent auction, to be held Friday, June 8, at Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville and honoring Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Orange County.

Chaired by Pamela Breeman of Warwick, the event will honor Cornell Cooperative Extension for its impact on Orange County’s economy, education and environment and for its leadership in disaster relief, environmental stewardship and youth development.

Main Course Catering of New Paltz specializes in farm-to-table dining and purchases its ingredients from local farms within a 50-mile radius of its eatery and catering facility. For the reception, chef/owner Bruce Kazan will purchase meats, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and other ingredients and locally made products from Orange County farms. The event will feature farm to table, cocktail-style dining paired with local wine and cocktails.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has provided Kazan with a list of local producers in preparation for the Land Trust’s largest annual fund-raising event, which celebrates land preservation and farmland protection in Orange County.

“We are delighted to introduce Main Course Catering to our farmers and the foods they produce,” said Lucy Joyce, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension and a member of the Board of Directors of the Orange County Land Trust. “Our farmers have been hit hard this past year, and Cornell and the Land Trust are happy to help support them in every way possible.”

The Orange County Land Trust has helped protect nearly 4,000 acres of land and working farms, working with individual landowners, Orange County executive and planning departments, and municipalities, as well as other conservation organizations to protect Orange County’s open spaces, and natural and agricultural heritage.
