Kids Club House welcomes chef Heather Kurosz
PINE ISLAND Chef Heather Kurosz is now teaching cooking classes at Kids Club House, located in the hamlet of Pine Island in Warwick.
The preschool offers a cooking club program that allows children to participate in a hands-on learning experience in the kitchen. The children prepare a different healthy recipe each week utilizing fresh ingredients and local produce from W. Rogowski Farm.
In order to be a good chef you need to taste and smell the ingredients that go into your food, Kurosz said in the schools press release announcing the program.
Besides preparing a special dish each week, the children also put a different fresh fruit, vegetable or herb into a food dehydrator where they can observe how it changes when it is dried out. These dehydrated foods are used for future recipes. Flavored water, juice or tea is also prepared from scratch by the young chefs. The drink-treat is enjoyed while the hard working kids prepare their weekly recipes.
The children also have able to watch live bees store honey in an observation beehive. Kuroszs husband, Andy, is a beekeeper.
Its important for children to see where their food comes from and the living creatures that so generously supply it for us, Kids Club House owner Carol Lahti said in the press release.
Kurosz is a culinary graduate of the Newbury School for Hotel and Restaurant Management in Boston. She also is an employee at W. Rogowski Farm where she has helped build the Black Dirt Gourmets prepared food line, established the popular weekend farm breakfast and started the monthly supper club.
Kids Club House on County Route 1 in Pine Island is a learning center that in addition to its preschool program, offers reading, art, math and science, and mommy and me classes, as well as kids birthday parties.
