Anthony Mancinelli, a 108-year-old barber and World War II Veteran from New Windsor, N.Y., will be flying to Washington, D.C., with 82 of his fellow veterans on Saturday, April 13, on Hudson Valley Honor Flight’s Mission 22.
He's become famous as "The World's Oldest Barber," profiled in The New York Times and by CBS News.
“We are continually amazed by the real-life stories of the veterans who sign up for Honor Flight,” said Chairman Frank Kimler. "Mr. Mancinelli’s story is one of many. We are so fortunate to have 14 veterans from World War II participating in this flight and with veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam and Desert Storm as well, this flight truly bridges many generations."
The flight will depart from New York Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, taking veterans on an all-expense paid trip to visit our nation’s war memorials. Veterans will travel by a police-escorted bus convoy while in D.C. for the daylong trip and return to New York that evening.
Veterans from tristate area counties — including Pike in Pennsylvania; Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam in New York; Bergen in New Jersey; and Fairfield in Connecticut — are in store for the trip of a lifetime. Among them are veterans of World II, post World War II, Korean War, Post Korean War, Vietnam, and Desert Storm.
"We are so grateful to ShopRite Supermarkets for their dedication and generosity,” said Executive Director Jennifer DeFrancesco. "We couldn’t do this without their support."
Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a local nonprofit based in Walden, N.Y., that honors Hudson Valley area veterans for all their sacrifices by bringing them to Washington to visit their respective war memorials at no cost to them. HVHF is also the local hub of the National Honor Flight Network, which has more than 100 independent non-profit “hubs” nationwide.
HVHF is currently seeking sponsorship for future missions, as there are many worthy and eligible veterans and HVHF wants to continue honoring them.
Top priority is given to those of the Greatest Generation, that of World War II, and terminally ill veterans from other wars. HVHF plans to take all veterans from other wars on future flights. Applications are kept on file.
