‘HERo’ 5K/10K and Kids Fun Run is Saturday, June 9

WARWICK — The fifth annual Memorial “HERo” 5K/10K, in memory of Lt. Col. Jaimie Leonard, a Warwick Valley High School graduate, will be held Saturday, June 9.
Leonard served in the Army for more than 16 years with multiple foreign deployments including one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.
She was killed in an insider attack June 8, 2013, in Sharana, Afghanistan.
In a 2010 Warwick Advertiser story, “A Soldier’s View of Memorial Day,” Leonard urged Americans to do more.
“HERoes In Deed” (HID) was created to honor that premise and Leonard in the completion of local projects.
Veterans History ProjectHID is working with the Veterans History Project, with veteran Ron Trapani managing the project in Warwick. The project preserves and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans.
HID is looking for veterans to tell their story, as well as community members to help record this piece of history. Those interested in participating should contact Trapani at Ron.Trapani2016@gmail.com.
The raceThe race’s start and finish is at the Warwick Middle School. Race day registration opens at 7:30 a.m. The kids run will start at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K/10K start will be at 9:15 a.m.
