PINE ISLAND — On Thursday morning, April 26, owner/chef Jorge Torres, his wife and staff were joined by public and chamber officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Harvest Restaurant, 633 County Route 1 in Pine Island.

It was not your traditional grand opening.

Torres has been successfully operating the popular eatery for the past 11 years. But in addition to Harvest Restaurant’s membership in the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce, he had decided to open new doors by also joining the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The Warwick Chamber is a full-service business development and marketing organization dedicated to helping businesses in the Town of Warwick reach their full potential through a number of leading edge initiatives that make consumers in the local municipalities, as well as, those in the surrounding areas aware of what members have to offer.

The Harvest Restaurant, for example, serves American, Mexican and Italian food. Although Mexican dishes are a specialty, a recent addition to the menu is Philly Cheese Steaks.

Torres, who emigrated from Mexico 20 years ago, has been cooking for 18 years, and began his career working in Italian restaurants, which is why Harvest Restaurant also serves several varieties of pizza.

“I first started as a dish washer and learned from the bottom up,” said Torres. “I was a cook in this restaurant for about six months when I had an opportunity to buy it and that’s what I did.”

Torres lives in Pine Island with his wife, Galdina, and their four sons ages two to 14. His nephew Cessar Torres serves as his assistant in the kitchen.

Harvest Restaurant is open seven days from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers take-out, catering and evening weekend delivery. Call 258-3060.
