WARWICK — For the past year Mikaella Verblaauw, 14, has served as a volunteer at Winslow Therapeutic Center’s 100-acre facility just off Route 17A between Bellvale and Mt. Peter.
She is also a member of Girl Scout Troop 500 in the Village of Florida.
While working at Winslow, the young lady observed that the center’s garden could use a few nice benches. And she needed a project for her a Silver Award, the second highest in Girl Scouts.
With the help of her father, Bob Verblaauw, Mikaella designed and organized the construction of three new benches. She also enlisted her brother Jared, 9, to help with the sanding.
In addition to the three new benches, Mikaella designed and produced a series of special coloring books for children with special needs who are in programs offered by Winslow.
“We are very grateful for these beautiful new benches for our garden,” said Winslow Executive Director Sue Ferro. “And we thank Mikaella and her family for their service and generosity.”
Winslow, founded in 1974, is a not for profit Hippotherapy and Therapeutic Riding Center devoted to the special needs population of Orange and surrounding counties. The Center has been offering unique and often life-changing horseback riding experiences to children and adults in this community since 1974.
