General’s Garden hosts grand opening

WARWICK — On Dec. 6, Deborah and Michael Sweeton were joined by Mayor Michael Newhard and members of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce for the official grand opening of the General’s Garden Center & Plant Market.
The General’s Garden, which is the retail garden center for Techni-Grower’s Greenhouses, is located at 172 Route 94 South in the Town of Warwick.
This time, in a departure from similar events, Michael Sweeton, who is also the Town of Warwick Supervisor and, as such, attends almost every new business grand opening, was handed the shears for the ribbon cutting.
The new facility, which has been open since April, is just around the corner from the company’s former retail store, now the studios of WTBQ Radio, and its greenhouses at 177 Sanfordville Road.
The 2500 square-foot building and adjacent greenhouses display a huge assortment of annuals, perennials and indoor plants cultivated on site using the latest “green” initiatives. It also features a large selection of trees and shrubs, seeds and bulbs, as well as hard goods like hand tools, pots of every type and size, bird baths, shoes and gloves, fertilizers and pest control.
The facilities can also be used for workshops and seminars.
“We have something for virtually every gardening need,” said Deborah Sweeton. “And because we are growers we know what it takes to successfully produce plants that are healthy and which will perform well in our customers’ gardens.”
Deborah Sweeton’s father, Dr. Paul King, founded the business in 1976.
She explained that the business was originally located in Amity but then moved in 1981 to Sanfordville Road where she and her father operated it primarily as a 30-acre wholesale flowering and foliage pot producer with a small retail store.
The General’s Garden Center & Plant Market is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
