Fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association Music Social Program

| 23 Jul 2013 | 03:25

A Fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association Music Social Program will be held at The Greenwood Lake Garden Center, 96 Windermere Ave., on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.. In case of rain, the program will be moved to the Greenwood Lake Elks Lodge at 35 Chestnut Street. Suggested donations of $10 for adults, $5 for children 5-10 years of age with children under 5 being free will benefit the Program.

Many local merchants including CVS Pharmacy, DeFeo’s Marina, Deidre’s Day Spa, Attorney Nancy Brenner D’Angelo, Finesse Auto Body, The Irish Whisper, Windermere Insurance Agency and more have generously donated to the event. DJ Steve Regan will donate his time for entertainment.

Host and Certified Music Therapist/Creative Arts Therapist Melinda Burgard, of Melinda’s Music, says that socialization programs are for those with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia and family caregiver. Melinda recalls when a couple danced together for the first time after five years of the husband's deterioration from probable Alzheimer's disease. "Thank you for helping us dance," the wife said. "It's the first time in three years that my husband held me in his arms." Tearfully, she said that she had missed him just holding her — and that music therapy had made that possible.

Programs provided by the Alzheimer’s Association Music Social Program take place in Goshen (At Glen Arden) and in Vails Gate (at the New Harvest Christian Church). There is no charge for this program but pre-registration is required. Contact either Donna or Emma at the Alzheimer's Association at 845-695-2247
