Florida School Board honors students
FLORIDA — The Florida School Board started its meeting on May 17 by honoring students within the district.
Members of Kristen Risedorph’s fifth grade select ensemble and William Couture’s high school select ensemble opened the meeting by performing a selection of songs. The performance showed the importance of the school board’s continued support of the school district’s arts and music programs.
Following that, S.S. Seward Principal Michael Rheaume presented the board with the recipients of several honors from the 2018 graduating class. The honorees included scholar athletes Nikki DeLos Santos (volleyball and basketball) and John Shaughnessy (cross country), as well as Christian Deas, who received an honor for his work in humanities, most notably for his work in the school’s theatre productions.
Theresa Bailey was also awarded for her work in humanities but additionally received recognition for winning U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney’s Congressional art competition. Her art, entitled “Grace,” will be displayed in the United States Capitol Building for the rest of the year.
Rheaume then introduced Class of 2018’s salutatorian and valedictorian.
Salutatorian John Shaughnessy, will be going to the University of Scranton to study chemistry and business. He also has received a Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship and is planning on serving in the United States Armed Forces in hopes of becoming a helicopter pilot.
Valedictorian Liam Quattrociocchi is planning on attending Marist College to study graphic design and math. Quattrociocchi, who earlier in the night had performed in the band, also served as vice president in the school’s student government.
