— Aerial yoga is a type of yoga which uses a hammock or yoga swing to allow students to perform postures that they may not ordinarily be able to attempt on the yoga mat.
Last November, Flexibility in Flight, a member of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, started the expansion of their aerial yoga studio space to include a new facility at 49 Main St. in Chester in addition to Studio C and Orange County's only outdoor silk deck.
On Wednesday, July 11, Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michael Johndrow joined Flexibility in Flight owner Terra Meierdierck, Studio Manager Jessica Scirbona and Aerial Instructor Janalee Wedenko to celebrate the grand reopening of the aerial studio.
The Main Street studio features airy space with white walls and pastel color silks.
Terra Meierdierck, who has owned Flexibility in Flight since 2015, stated that she is passionate about the studio, teaching others and building a community. And all of the instructors at the studio are certified and dedicated to creating a positive and uplifting learning environment for their students.
"The core focus of Flexibility in Flight is small group instruction," said Meierdierck, who holds a Master's Degree in Education and believes students learn best with more individualized attention and scaffolding our curriculum.
"The staff," she added, "works with each individual's needs and tries to accommodate all learning styles."
Meierdierck also believes one on one attention is critical for children classes for safety, as well as learning retention. For this reason, they keep the sizes of the kids' classes especially small. It is also important to her that each student has their own piece of equipment, silk or Lyra, and does not have to share, for efficient use of class time for the student.
Flexibility in Flight has a heavy circus influence in their aerial style, with yoga values and practice. They offer classes for aerial fabric, aerial hammock silks, aerial yoga, Lyra aerial hoop, burlesque dance, bellydance, liquid motion, Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Barre, acro dance, tumbling and AcroYoga.
The mission of Flexibility in Flight is to create a supportive learning environment for students, with a focus on cleanliness. The silks are washed regularly; all mats are wiped down after each use; panel mats are provided for each student and a crash mat is available. All the rigging for the studios was provided by an expert rigger, to ensure safety.
