WARWICK — On Saturday, Feb. 16, there was a steady stream of visitors to Warwick's Caffe a La Mode for the Warwick Volunteer Fire Department's first "Coffee with a Fireman."
The event held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. was an opportunity for local citizens to discuss their questions and thoughts with members of the organization.
There was no agenda. It was simply an opportunity to meet your local firefighters over a cup of coffee.
The history of the Warwick Volunteer Fire Department goes back to 1869 when the Excelsior Fire Engine Co. No 1 was organized in the Village of Warwick.
That was followed throughout the years by the formation of the Florida Fire Department, the Goodwill Hook and Ladder Company, the Raymond Hose Co. 2 and Engine Company No. 3 along with other companies formed in Greenwood Lake, Pine Island and Amity.
"The event," said 2nd Assistant Chief Mike Contaxis, "was successful. We would like to thank the owners of Caffe A La Mode and their staff and the community. Even though we did not recruit any new members we were successful in many ways including building a stronger bond with our community and spreading the word about our 150th Anniversary."
Other 150th anniversary events scheduled this year include the annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 20; the Fireman's Carnival and Fireworks June 26-29; hosting the 104th Orange County Volunteer Fireman's Association annual convention and parade on Sept. 28 and the annual Christmas Tree-lighting on Nov. 29.
