Fighting hunger one bowl at a time

WARWICK — The premise of the grass roots effort known as Empty Bowls is, at its root, very simple: Help feed someone who is hungry one bowl at a time. It also is a national and international effort that at its core is local.
Warwick’s Empty Bowl 2013 fund raiser is scheduled for Friday, March 8 and will benefit five organizations that provide food or meals to those in need: throughout the town of Warwick: the Backpack Snack Attack program for students, Florida Community Food Pantry, Greenwood Lake Food Pantry, Warwick Community Kitchen in Pine Island and the Warwick Ecumenical Food Pantry.
The benefit runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at Warwick Valley High School.
The evening event will feature live bands, student musicians, pottery demonstrations, silent auction and a community meal of gourmet soups, fresh bread and dessert.
Although the message is serious, organizers have expanded the evening’s offerings to include the entire family, especially children, such as tattoos, unwrapping game, Bingo, sack relay race and coloring tables.
In addition, local potters Sharon Galbraith and Dana Drake will help with two “Make It & Take It” projects:
Kids make a tiny bowl on the pottery wheel, which they take home to let dry and decorate with paint.
Kids decorate a hand-thrown cup by forming a face in it with their fingers, which they take home to let dry and decorate with paint.
These projects are for decorative use only - not for food or drink; there will be a small supply fee per project.
