Even after nine years, someone’s still letting the dogs out

WARWICK — The weather was unseasonably hot for dogs and their owners but nevertheless on Saturday, June 1, Applewood Winery at Four Corners Road in Warwick, hosted the ninth annual “Who Let the Dogs Out” fund raiser for the Warwick Valley Humane Society.
The event began with a scavenger hunt for the dogs and an opportunity for event-goers to purchase photographs of their canine companions taken by photographer Chris Babicke.
Jeanne Nostrame, a member of the Warwick Valley Humane Society’s Board of Trustees, returned to serve as emcee and coordinator of the event. And event-goers had an opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket to have an original oil painting of their own dog by her mother, artist Carlisle Nostrame.
The event featured canine contests such as best costume, best trick, best tail-wagger, best kisser and fastest eater.
The Humane Society raised more than $700.
“The heat beat us,” said Suzyn Barron, president of the Warwick Valley Humane Society who attributed the result, down about 25 per cent from last year, to temperatures in the low 90s.
Nevertheless the guests enjoyed meeting several of the society’s canine residents of the animal shelter who came and paraded for them in their “ADOPT ME” vests.
Just before the start of the contests, Nostrame introduced seven-year-old triplets Aeva, Elle and Reece Manara and their dog Bella, winner of the best tail-wagger contest.
The children had recently sold lemonade and raised $76, saved in a jar, which they donated to the Warwick Valley Humane Society.
As with every weekend at the Applewood Winery, wine tastings were available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Courtyard Café also featured light fare and the Applewood Winery’s signature sangria. And there was live music in the courtyard.
“ On behalf of our organization,” said Barron, “I would like to thank Jeanine Nostrame for a well-planned and executed fund raiser and also all those who donated their time and talent that day. This is an annual event for us at Applewood Winery so we ask everyone to mark their calendars now for next June’s Who Let the Dogs Out.”
