WARWICK — Community members are invited to join the fight against local hunger at Warwick Valley Empty Bowls 2013 on Friday, March 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Warwick Valley High School.

The evening event will feature live bands, student musicians, kids’ games and activities, pottery demonstrations, silent auction and a community meal, served continuously, of gourmet soups, fresh bread and dessert.

With the assistance of local high school culinary students, Chef Erik Johansen of the Iron Forge Inn restaurant in Warwick will create several “family friendly” gourmet soups, including chicken noodle, minestrone, butternut squash and potato leek, using many local ingredients.

A variety of fresh bread and cookies will be provided by local businesses and organizations, and additional kids’ food will be available.

A limited number of handmade pottery bowls will be available for purchase.

Activities
Area musicians also will perform:

5 p.m. – Laura Birdsong and Steve Vecchiotti, a folk/rock duet.

6 p.m. - Michael Purcell, voted Times Herald-Record’s “Best Jazz Musician” 2013.

7:15 p.m.– Zephyr, a vocal ensemble.

In addition, several high school and middle school musical students and groups will perform.

The silent auction will feature many wonderful donated items, with bidding from 5 to 7 p.m. and pickup from 7 to 8 p.m. An auction preview will be available on the Empty Bowls Web site before the event, with postings including sponsor name and link, item description and photograph.

The community service participation of local high school students is an important aspect of the fund raiser. In addition to student chefs, volunteers from service clubs will assist with setup, serving, cleanup and help Lion’s Club volunteers run kids’ games and activities.

The design on the Empty Bowls 2013 poster was created by WVHS graduate Eliza Bender.

Why
