Ed Diana faces liver failure

GOSHEN — Orange County Executive Ed Diana announced today that his health is threatened by a condition that could lead to liver failure.

Diana said he suffers from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. At its most severe, the disease can progress to liver failure, according to the Mayo Clinic Web site.

Diana's name has already been placed on a waiting list for liver transplant surgery. If a match is found and the procedure moves forward, Diana would name Jim O'Donnell, currently the county's deputy county executive, as acting executive until his return.

With his wife and daughter beside him, Diana pledged the disease will not keep him from his work as a public servant.

“Let me first assure you that I feel well and am as committed as ever to the job of County Executive and service to the people of Orange County,” said Diana. “My doctors at Crystal Run Healthcare and at Columbia Presbyterian, where the procedure will be performed, have advised me that this condition will cause continued deterioration of my liver. My overall health is good and my lifestyle is active making this the best time to pursue this option and have a positive outcome.”

Diana intends to run for re-election in 2013, according to Spokeswoman Orysia Dmytrenko.
