WARWICK — The Warwick Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a pancake breakfast fund raiser on Sunday, Feb. 11, with 100 percent of the money raised going to benefit the Sibirtzeff family, who lost their home, family pet and every possession to a devastating house fire.
The fire broke out at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 6 in Pine Island due to a suspected chimney malfunction.
“My father, John, was awoken by their dog, Logan," said Lisa Sibirtzeff of Huguenot. "My father, mother and brother, Paul, were in the house. They got out in time but Logan, their dog, did not. It’s upsetting that the dog that saved their life didn’t make it out.”
With the house left in ruins, the fire caused a severe amount of damage and financial ruin for the family.
“My parents lost everything and are an elderly couple," Sibirtzeff said. "There was no insurance on the property."
There was also a significant amount of sentimental damage done as well.
“Everything was lost — my parents and brother escaped with only what they were wearing and nothing else,” Sibirtzeff said.
Despite the unfortunate circumstances, the community has shown massive support.
“The Pine Island and Warwick communities have been very supportive,” said Sibirtzeff. “The Sibirtzeff family would like to extend a thank you to all volunteers who came out to fight the fire; they are deserving of recognition, as they worked very hard to put out the fire with the elements working against them.”
Because of the outpouring support shown, the family is managing to get through this difficult time.
“At this point, we are a strong family unit and are helping them through this difficult time in any way we can,” Sibirtzeff said. “We are all keeping positive and moving forward little by little each day.”
The breakfast will run from 9 to 11 a.m. in the St. Stephen's St. Edward's gymnasium on 75 Sandfordville Road in Warwick.
Tickets are $10 per person.
