Earth Day festivities planned April 21 and 22 in Warwick

    — Sustainable Warwick and Wickham Works, two local not-for-profit organizations, will join forces to host an Earth Day Festival on April 21 and 22.
Stanley Deming Park will be transformed into a celebration of Warwick’s commitment to preserve our pristine landscape and rural character.
'Too Good To Toss'The public will be invited to participate in the second annual "Too Good To Toss "community swap sponsored by Sustainable Warwick.
"As a result of the feedback about Too Good to Toss last year, we are happy to do our part on behalf of the community to support the event by covering the cost of the tents and tables to help keep things organized," Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton and Village of Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard said in a joint statement detailing the program.
Rather than kick unwanted items to the curb for eventual transfer to a landfill, the community is invited to bring clean items, in good repair, with all working parts, to the basketball court on Saturday, April 21, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
For a complete list of acceptable/unacceptable items, visit http://sustainablewarwick.org/too-good-to-toss-acceptable-items.
On Sunday, April 22, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the public may take the donated items for free.
Last year, people cleaned out their closets and basements and generously donated, in one day, items that would have otherwise filled 12 Dumpsters.
Volunteers sorted and arranged clothing, office, craft and art supplies, housewares, decorations, bicycles, sports equipment, tools, toys, musical instruments, and baby gear, among other categories to make them easy to “shop.”
Between donors and shoppers, more than 500 people visited Too Good To Toss.
"Inspiring event," Warwick Town Historian Richard Hull said, "which I would regard as one of the most successful community building exercises I’ve observed in my many years of research and writing on our town. It brought people of all backgrounds together in a common endeavor of giving, and taking, tangible household objects of real value and mutual benefit.”
Earth Day FestivalOn Sunday, April 22, the Earth Day Festival will feature the third-annual Treecycle, a great opportunity to join local artists and help turn trash into treasure, making one-of-a-kind tree sculptures. And you’ll pick up some practical tips to reduce your environmental footprint along the way.
Folks of all ages will have a blast rolling up their sleeves and making art. At the end of the day, everyone is invited to take an illuminated walk through the Earth Day Fantasy Forest that they helped create. After the event, watch for tree sculptures popping up around town!
In advance of Treecycle, artists team up with local youth groups - nine so far - to brainstorm concepts, gather supplies, and make components for their sculptures. On Earth Day, Treecycle will feature local vendors selling environmentally friendly products and services. There also will be children’s hand-on activities, local music and performers, and lots of friendly faces.
