Dunkelman Diabetes center merits national recognition

MIDDLETOWN The Orange Regional Dunkelman Diabetes Center education program recently received continued national recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The education recognition certificate assures that the center meets their high national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who provide up-to-date information about diabetes management to their patients and participants of support groups.
Diabetes education is an essential component of diabetes management. Patients who learn the necessary skills to correctly manage their diabetes have better control of the disease. With proper education to control diabetes, many people with diabetes are able to prevent or delay the onset of complications that may include high blood pressure; skin and foot complications; hearing loss; oral health problems; kidney disease and stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes affects 25.8 million people or approximately 8.3 percent of the U.S. population and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
This prestigious honor means that the American Diabetes Association acknowledges that our team of diabetes educators is highly effective at training their patients to properly manage their disease, says Orange Regional Dunkelman Diabetes Center Manager, Shelly DeHaan, R.D., C.D.E.
The centers staff members work with patients with diabetes and their doctors to develop an individualized program of treatment to manage the disease. The center provides comprehensive education and support for children, adolescent and adult patients with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Services include nutritional counseling; blood glucose monitoring; continuous glucose monitoring; insulin instruction and insulin pump training; diabetes self-management classes and diabetes management during pregnancy.
Additionally, the Center offers adult and child support groups for persons with diabetes and their families, as well as an insulin pump support group.
