Dr. Richard Hull to offer presentation on 'Utopians and Utopias in Warwick's past'

WARWICK — Next Tuesday evening, July 11, Town of Warwick Historian Richard W. Hull, Ph.D. will offer a lecture, open to the public, titled, "Utopians and Utopias in Warwick's past."
The presentation will be given in the Warwick Historical Society's Old School Baptist MeetingHouse in Lewis Park, across from Village Hall, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Refreshments will be served.
In addition to serving as Town of Warwick Historian, Hull, recently retired, has been a longtime professor of history at New York University and the author of several books on local history. He is also a trustee of the Warwick Historical Society.
Utopians and Utopias in Warwick's past is about great visionaries from near and far who established radically new communities in Warwick that inspired, challenged and awakened the creative energies of its local inhabitants.
Hull examines selected utopian experiments in Warwick over the last three centuries and assesses their motivations and impacts.
Among the utopians were world famous baseball stars like Jackie Robinson, prominent architects, theologians, scientists, land speculators and entrepreneurs.
"They were of European, Asian and African birth or ancestry," Hull said. "Many were refugees from oppression and all were dreamers. And they looked to Warwick as a place to realize their dreams. This is a fascinating saga of the mind and spirit that inspires and elevates."
Members and students may attend free of charge. The admission for seniors is $10 and for non-members $20. All proceeds support the historical society.
