Deadline for WVSD driver education program is Aug. 24

WARWICK During the upcoming fall semester, driver education will be offered at Warwick Valley High School by an independent driving school. The cost to each student will be $355. Students will be chosen by a lottery system with seniors and juniors having priority. Sophomores will be eligible if spaces are available after all seniors and juniors have been assigned their scheduled times. The deadline for applications to be returned to the office of John Russo, the director of human resources and safety, is Aug. 24. All applications must be accompanied by a check for the $355 fee. The program is supplemental to and not a part of the regular school curriculum. The program is run after school and on weekends. The program does not count as credit towards a local or Regents diploma. The program is not offered as part of an Adult or Continuing Education Program. Students will be expected to attend all of the driving and classroom instruction on the days they are assigned. Students that exceed two absences in driving will be charged at a rate of $50 per make-up session. Students participating in the program will be attending sessions totaling three hours per week: 90 minutes in the classroom and 90 minutes in the car.
These sessions will be assigned to each student by a lottery system. The course will run from September through January. Any student who wishes to participate in the program must have their Drivers License or Learners Permit as issued by the Motor Vehicle Bureau and must be 16 years of age on or before Sept. 15. Students dropping the program during the first week will be refunded $290. After the first week of instruction has been completed there will be no refunds.
