Two people let us know that we had misidentified the hawk on the cover of last week’s Warwick Advertiser.

Here are those letters:

Great cover photo.

Unfortunately, the captions misidentified the bird, in hard print and online, as a Red-Tailed hawk, which the pictured bird is not. It’s a Rough-Legged hawk, a species that Winters in our area.

Our org. has always offered to help you with wildlife identifications; please reach out next time to avoid this kind of thing on your cover, of all places.

The pictures on the cover of this weeks advertiser are not of a Red Tail Hawk.

The bird is a light phase Rough-Legged Hawk. A rare bird that spends the winters out in the black dirt region of orange county. Great pics though!

If you are interested, the Rough-Leggeds come in a gorgeous Dark Phase, too, and there are a few of them out at the Black Dirt region.
