Cornell Cooperative offers child discipline program

NEW WINDSOR — Cornell Cooperative Extension will be presenting “Discipline is NOT a Dirty Word,” beginning Feb. 6 at Little Britain Elementary School in New Windsor.
This is a three-session program designed to train parents how discipline – when used effectively and correctly – can bring the results they are looking for.
“Most parents and relative caregivers agree that getting their children to behave is both important AND difficult,” Extension Educator Suzan Sussmann said in the press release announcing the program. “The good news is that by learning the effective way to discipline, parents will see a remarkable improvement in their children’s attitude.”
“Discipline is NOT a Dirty Word” is designed to help parents and relative caregivers of young children learn and practice seven tools for positive and persuasive discipline. Topics will include:
What is my parenting style?
Why my children behave the way they do?
Effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
How to set realistic limits and provide natural and logical consequences.
“It’s very rewarding to see how quickly participants pick up the new skills, and put them to work,” Sussmann added. “They usually end the series feeling happy and confident that they‘re better parents than when they arrived. The impact it makes on their lives is probably why ‘Discipline is NOT a Dirty Word’ is one of our most popular programs.”
