Computer Guy developing Oculus Rift virtual reality programs

WARWICK — At the recent Warwick Business Expo Kevin Brand, owner of The Computer Guy (17 West St.), made sure everyone was seated when he and technician Matt Hibbert demonstrated an Oculus Rift virtual reality program.

"This is so realistic," said Brand, "that you can loose your balance if you are standing."

The Rift is a virtual reality apparatus, a head-mounted display, designed by Oculus VR, a division of Facebook.

"At The Computer Guy," said computer technician Ryan O'Leary, "we are constantly experimenting with new technologies to provide the best experience for our customers. And as the Oculus continues to improve, so too will we improve on our program development for the Rift."

Set of lenses to display each image

O'Leary explained that the 3D effect is created by feeding an image to each eye at a slight angle.

But unlike older VR systems, the Oculus utilizes a set of lenses to display each image instead of the overlapping effect of traditional 3D technology.

The goggles have embedded sensors that monitor the wearer's head motions and adjust the image accordingly.

Although there are games that will be compatible with the Rift, the programs under development at The Computer Guy, are primarily geared for businesses.

Walk-throughs without leaving the office

For example a landscape or building architect will be able to "walk" his client through a proposal that will display the completed project in 3D imagery.

A Realtor can take a client through several home listings without leaving the office.
