By assisting diverse non-profit agencies, students volunteering in the City of Reading are exposed to the vast social and economic inequalities that characterize the country’s urban landscape, of which Reading is a poignant microcosm. While one group of Alvernia students volunteered for Opportunity House, Berk’s Encore Senior Center and the Reading Collegiate Scholars program, a second group focused on Hope Lutheran Church’s food pantry, Berks Heim and Habitat Restore. Both groups participated in the Manana after-school program.
