Call for Irish history essays

MONROE — The deadline for students in grades 6 through 12 to submit an essay in the National Irish History writing contest, sponsored by the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, is Friday, Jan. 25.

Levels

The contest is comprised of two levels:

Level 1 is for students in Grades 6, 7 or 8.

The theme for Level 1 student is: Castles of Ireland: Location structure and use.

The essay should be between 500 and 1,000 words.

Level 2 is for students in Grades 9, 10, 11, or 12.

The theme for Level 2 students is: Mother Jones and the American Labor Movement.

The essay should be between 750 and 1,500 words.

Awards

The awards for Level 1 students will be:

First place: $500

Second place: $250

Third place: $125

Honorable mention (two): $50

The awards will for Level 2 students will be:

First place: $1,000

Second place: $500

Third place: $250

Honorable mention (two): $100

Eligibility

Students who are enrolled in parochial, private, or public schools or who are home-schooled are eligible to participate in the Irish History Writing Contest. Contest Essays due by Jan. 25, 2013 and must follow the established guidelines available by e-mail request: laoh_irishhistory@frontier.com
