Big tomatoes

WARWICK — While none of the entrants could grow a tomato larger than the world’s largest (7-3/4 lbs.), the three winners of the first Biggest Tomato Contest, announced by Scheuermann Farms & Greenhouses in the Black Dirt Region of Warwick, submitted some extraordinary specimens.
According to Sally Scheuermann, the weigh-in on Sunday, Sept. 3, produced the following:
First prize went to Darryl Slate, Highland Lakes, N.J.,with his 1 lb. 11 oz. green tomato.
Second prize went to Stella Muehlbauer of Warwick with her 16 oz. yellow tomato.
Third prize was awarded to Steve Carras, also of Warwick, with his 15 oz. red tomato.
All three winners received gift certificates to Scheuermann Farms and Ooops I Forgot Gift Shop as well as the bragging rights that accompany their super green thumbs.
Scheuermann Farm & Greenhouse is located at 73 Little York Road in Warwick (http://warwickinfo.net/scheuermann) is home to 7,000 pots of perennials and a variety of flower and vegetable bedding plants as well as fresh produce picked daily from its Black Dirt farm.
The Scheuermann Farm is the featured outdoor performance venue for the Warwick Summer Arts Festival and the Black Dirt Feast, and is home to the world’s best sweet corn.
