    On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 24, a colorful assembly of members of the Spanish Ministry of the Warwick Reformed Church formed a line of march from the church down Main Street, in the Village of Warwick, to the Railroad Green.

    After arriving at Railroad Green and throughout the evening everyone was invited to sample the free food tastings of cuisine from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador.

    During the ceremony Arlett Montes, a Mexican diplomat and award presenter, led the crowd in chants of “Viva Mexico!”

WARWICK — On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 24, a colorful assembly of members of the Spanish Ministry of the Warwick Reformed Church formed a line of march from the church down Main Street, in the Village of Warwick, to the Railroad Green.
This year, the event was hosted by Rev. Rolfi Elivo, pastor of the Hispanic Ministry, and cosponsored by Bayaney Sounds, the Community Action Network and WIN (Warwick Immigrant Neighbors.)
The event was also a partnership between the Spanish Ministry and the Sesquicentennial Committee.
After arriving at Railroad Green and throughout the evening everyone was invited to sample the free food tastings of cuisine from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and El Salvador.
The ceremony began with approximately 200 visitors standing for the American and Mexican national anthems.
A simultaneous translator was on hand as Rev. Elivo introduced Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard who praised the group for adding to the diversity and culture of the community.
On a more somber note, Oscar Siguroa, president of the Hispanic Ministry Corporation, asked for a moment of silence for the people in the Caribbean, who suffered havoc from the recent hurricanes, as well as those in Mexico, struck by several serious earthquakes this year alone.
He asked that donations be placed in a box placed on the Green and promised that the money would be sent through private channels directly to the Mexican citizens who need the help.
Newhard and "Kid Mayor" Danny Alquezada Madero were among those presenting the annual recognition awards and medals.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group's heritage and culture.
Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson and expanded by President Ronald Reagan to cover the current 30-day period.
