Back in the race

CHESTER — On Sunday, Feb. 9, former Congresswoman Nan Hayworth officially announced her candidacy for Congress in the 18th District before a crowd of approximately 400 supporters at the Satin Fine Foods facility in Chester.
Hayworth, a Republican, had recently served in the U.S. House of Representatives as the Congresswoman from New York's 19th District, which was composed of parts of Orange, Dutchess, Rockland and Westchester counties.
In 2012, after redistricting, she ran for a second term in the newly redrawn 18th District, which also includes Warwick, and was defeated by Democrat Sean Maloney.
On Sunday, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus and state Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor addressed the crowd and shared their strong support for Hayworth.
Neuhaus then introduced the candidate as she took the stage.
'The American Dream'
"I am determined to restore respect for the hard work and individual freedom that made America the Promised Land for generations of immigrants," said Hayworth. "I am determined to assure that everyone will have their chance to achieve the American Dream."
During her remarks, Hayworth announced her commitment to empowering citizens to buy the health insurance that they would like, allowing parents to send their children to the schools of their choice, and reforming an outdated and unnecessarily complex tax code that penalizes the middle class.
A doctor who heals
"Washington is deep into a process of controlling where and when and how the dollars we work for are spent," she said. "I am here to tip the scales back to you."
Hayworth is a doctor, a mother of two and long-time resident of the Hudson Valley. She earned her undergraduate degree from Princeton and her medical degree the Cornell University Medical College. After completing her residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, she opened her own solo practice in the Hudson Valley.
"I am fighting as a doctor who cared for patients for nearly 20 years here," said Hayworth. "I know first-hand how important it is to have insurance you can afford, and to have access to good care."
Hayworth is expected to be the Republican candidate in a highly contested contest with Congressman Maloney this November.
