FLORIDA — Two sisters from the Village of Florida donated more than 100 pairs of news shoes to the Martin Luther School in Maspeth, Queens, whose students were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The story of how Orla Brosnan, 12, and her older sister Sinead, 15, got involved with a school in Queens began in the days after Hurricane Sandy. The sisters were watching the ABC television program, “Good Morning, America,” and were moved by a feature about a coach in Maspeth, Queens, who started a drive to collect shoes for kids who lost clothes and other fundamental items though the damage caused by the super storm.

The sisters attend Florida schools; Orla is a member of Girl Scout Troop 494 in Florida; Sinead is a member of Troop 494, also in the Village of Florida.

Troop 315 leader Martina Brosnan contacted James Regan, the athletic and admissions director of the Martin Luther School, who was more than happy to received the donations.

The money Orla and Sinead used to purchase the shoes came from a from a garage sale they held over the summer and from a generous donation from a friend.
