WARWICK — Warwick resident Robert Baier, a handwriting and security expert, keynote speaker and author, has been selected from a nationwide search to be featured in “GPS (Goals and Proven Strategies) for Success,” a book series from Tennessee-based Insight Publishing. In the new book Baier (pronounced buyer) is interviewed along with best-selling authors Stephen R. Covey (Seven Habits of Highly Effective People), Dr. John Gray (Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus), and Les Brown (The Power of Purpose). They are joined by other well-known authors and speakers, each offering time-tested strategies for success. Baier is a certified handwriting expert and a certified forensic document examiner (CDE). He currently trains law enforcement agencies in New York State and serves as an instructor at the School of Forensic Document Examining where he received the 2008 “Faculty Member of the Year” award. Baier is also the author of the widely acclaimed book “Identity Theft - Prevention for the College Student,” which he uses to train law enforcement. An editorial review of this book on Amazon.com describes it as one that should be required reading for all college bound high school students. The majority of the authors interviewed in GPS for Success explain how they achieved fame and fortune. Baier’s chapter, however, is titled, “How to Hold Onto Your Money.” In his interview, Baier, who points out that criminals from all over the world take $50 billion from the people of the United States each year, addresses the many ways to lose your money through fraud. He explains how to protect yourself from scams including some innovative methods that have only recently come to the attention of law enforcement. Skimming, for example, involves the use of an electronic device held below the check out counter that can record all the information on your credit card. “Never let your credit card out of your sight,” warns Baier. Today, most people who use a computer are aware of phishing, where an e-mail tries to trick you into providing personal information. But have you ever heard of spear phishing? In GPS for Success Baier explains that with this specific form of phishing hackers first gain access to an executive’s company e-mail address. They then send e-mails, which appear to come from company headquarters, to every employee. That request for personal information is hard to refuse.
