Lions Labor Day 5K Race/Walk set for Monday

Warwick — The Warwick Lions Club’s annual Labor Day 5K race and walk has a new name this year: It has been renamed and dedicated to the late Carol McManus, longtime race director and former president of the Lions Club. McManus lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in April 2006. However, her legacy lives on. Monday, September 3, will be the 16th running of the Lions 5K, now called the Carol McManus Memorial 5K presented by the Warwick Lions Club. The fun starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Warwick Middle School with registration. The race begins at 9 a.m. George McManus, who shared race director duties with his wife, now works with Jack Ellis on the race. In each of the past two years, more than 700 runners and walkers have participated in the race. The race will continue to benefit the Lions Quest Program, a program in schools throughout the nation, including Warwick, that emphasizes positive prevention, character education and life skills, and enhanced academic performance through social and emotional learning. Two years ago, Carol McManus and her supporters, “Team Carol,” raised more than $10,000 for Pan CAN, an organization dedicated to pancreatic cancer research. Last year, as well, participants were asked to donate to cancer research. Participants of the race this year will have the option to donate to the Carol McManus Memorial Fund for Cancer Research. Checks for the donation may be made payable to either the Lion’s Club or the Carol McManus Memorial Fund for Cancer Research. The entry fee $17 the day of the event. The kids Fun Run is $3 per child.
